UVSO’s housing development program commenced in 1983 and to date we have rehabilitated and or constructed one hundred and eighty units. We pre-sell all homes to first-time low-to-moderate income buyers. We also provide one-on-one housing counseling to prospective homebuyers, emphasizing homeownership as a means of improving ones economic base. Housing maintenance training workshops are conducted for new homebuyers and those who purchased our homes within the past three years. Those who purchased homes with two or more units are supplied with a Lease for their tenants and the Fannie Mae handbook "Becoming a Landlord". We assist them with the review of the workbook in order that they can answer the questions and receive their certificate.
Housing applicants are pre-approved through one of our financial affiliates. Those who are not approved because of their credit rating are referred to the Urban League of Essex County, or Citizen Action for credit counseling.
We are able to sell the homes at below market value by obtaining grants to subsidize the construction costs.
